Food waste is one of the most significant environmental challenges of our time, with vast amounts ending up in landfills and contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. A growing number of innovative businesses in Sydney are stepping up to tackle this issue head-on. From promoting zero-waste shopping and composting solutions to transforming waste into valuable resources like fertilizers and sustainable packaging, these 10 pioneering businesses are redefining how we approach food waste and sustainability.

  1. Village Wholefoods: They promote a more sustainable way of shopping food. They sell bulk products, including organic, non-organic, gluten free and vegan items. The best part is that you can bring your own reusable packaging!
  2. We are RE: They are dedicated to reducing food waste by running a zero waste bar, from materials to their fermented ingredients for their cocktails. Awarded most sustainable bar in the world in 2021 by 50 Best Bars. (Permanently closed)
  3. Youth Food Movement: Committed to promoting food literacy. From 2011-2022, they worked really hard to educate youth about farming and the challenges around food security, connecting people to land and also teaching essential cooking and nutrition skills.
  4. Feather and Bone: They are an ethical butchery with strong emphasis on incorporating sustainability into their businesses. They implement circularity by collecting back delivery boxes for reuse.
  5. Bardee: Transforms food waste into protein and plant fertiliser. Their product, Superfly, is made from 100% black soldier fly castings & exoskeletons. They turn food scraps into a powerful tool for plant nutrition: a potent blend of beneficial microbes, chitin, organic matter, and 10+ essential nutrients, a probiotic superfood for plants.
  6. Cool Seats: These seats are designed to be placed in urban areas and hold compost underneath them. They are a great solution to tackle local food waste, very practical, and efficient due to the help of black soldier flies.
  7. Compost Connect: This platform operates across Australia and New Zealand and is committed to diverting food waste by making compost more accessible. They help businesses and individuals connect to local compost services.
  8. Farmwall: A modern solution for efficient indoor agriculture. Their system improves air quality, saves energy, and provides fresh, nutritious food with minimal waste.
  9. Fungi Solutions: They use fungi to divert waste from the landfill and grow natural alternatives to plastics and packaging solutions.
  10. ReGround: A social enterprise helping organizations and individuals create a circular economy through innovative waste collection and waste minimisation projects. They collect coffee, chaff, and soft plastics to give them a new life.
