About Bayer Australia

Bayer Australia is the local arm of the global health and life sciences company, with a life-stage portfolio spanning pregnancy and women's health, everyday wellness and fitness recovery.

The project was engaged via Sussex Australasia.

The brief: 10 products, cross-border marketing

  • Introduce Bayer's full life-stage health portfolio to Chinese cross-border shoppers.

  • Work within strict Australian and Chinese advertising compliance limits that ruled out claims about any of the 10 products

  • Communicate real brand value across the portfolio without relying on verbal claims

  • Design an experience Chinese consumers and influencers would want to film and share

  • Deliver the full activation in a single build day

01 Designing activities instead of arguments

Instead of explaining 10 different functions, we designed For the Love of Family, an immersive activation at the Museum of Contemporary Art where each product became something people could walk into, play in and feel.

Sensory design did the work verbal claims couldn't. It let us communicate what mattered about each product without saying anything Australian or Chinese compliance would flag.

02 Building a room for each product's story

Elevit, a pregnancy and women's health supplement, became a pink ball pit with a heartbeat soundscape, nurture and warmth built into the architecture itself. Canesten became red bowling, turning hygiene into play. Berocca became an orange fitness activity, translating energy into movement.

Every colour, sound and material choice was tied back to what that product actually stood for, so the brand story came through the experience rather than a sign next to it.

03 Installing a museum-scale activation in 1 day

The full environment was designed, partnered with a build team, and installed in 1 day inside the Museum of Contemporary Art, a timeline that left no room for on-site problem-solving once doors opened.

That speed mattered because the activation had to perform the moment Chinese cross-border shoppers and influencers walked in.

04 Letting influencer livestreams do the marketing

We designed For the Love of Family to be something people would want to film and share. Influencers in the room livestreamed the activation as it happened, and the sensory format meant every stream carried the brand story without carrying a claim.

The activation drew millions of cross-border livestream views within hours of opening, reach compliance-safe advertising alone could not have delivered.

05 Where the relationship went

For the Love of Family became a repeatable format: Bayer Australia had run it as an ongoing popup program in the years since. The relationship has also grown well past the original brief. For the next 2 years, we continued to work with Sussex Australiasia to provide creative direction for Bayer's events across Sydney.

Project impact

  • Millions of cross-border livestream views within 5 hours of the activation opening, driven by influencers livestreaming from the room

  • A repeatable activation format that became an ongoing Bayer popup program over several years

  • Proof that a multi-product, compliance-constrained brand can be communicated through sensory design rather than verbal claim

Key takeaways for health marketing

  • Design around the constraint. Compliance limits ruled out claims, so we replaced claims with feeling — the restriction became the creative brief.

  • Show, don't claim. A product's story can travel through colour, sound and material as effectively as through language, without the regulatory risk.

  • Build for speed when the moment won't wait. A fixed date and no soft-launch window meant the concept had to be locked well before the 1-day build began.

  • Design for sharing. An activation people want to livestream reaches further than one they simply attend.

  • A good format doesn't end with one campaign. This activation became a multi-year popup program and an ongoing creative direction partnership.

Health marketing: FAQs

How do you market a product when advertising rules won't let you make a claim?

You design an experience instead of a message. Every regulated market limits what health and pharma brands can say, so we translated Bayer's 10 products into activities people could feel rather than statements they had to trust: nurture as a pink ball pit for Elevit, hygiene as play for Canesten, energy as movement for Berocca. Compliance restricts language, not experience.

How do you present a whole portfolio without repeating the same pitch 10 times?

Give each product its own sensory identity instead of one shared script. We treated each product as a distinct room within one activation, so the portfolio read as a coherent brand rather than a lineup of near-identical pitches, and visitors could engage with whichever parts were relevant to them.

How do you build a museum-scale activation on a tight timeline?

By deciding what can't move and building everything else around it. The date was fixed by Singles' Day, so the full environment, partnered with a specialist build team, was designed and installed in 1 day at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Compressed timelines work when the concept is locked well before the build starts.

How do you design an activation that gets shared without paying for reach?

Build something people want to film before they're asked to. For the Love of Family drew millions of cross-border livestream views within hours of opening, driven by the influencers already in the room rather than a paid media plan layered on afterwards. A shareable format does distribution work an ad budget would otherwise have to buy.

What happens after a one-off activation like this works?

It stops being one-off. For the Love of Family became a repeatable popup format Bayer has run for years, and the relationship has grown into an ongoing creative direction partnership now running for 2 years and counting, extending from museum installations to activations built inside buses.
