About Basalt Orange
Basalt Orange is a luxury accommodation in Orange, NSW, built on a working cherry orchard. The family-run business offers a unique blend of comfort, seclusion and breathtaking views across the region's landscape. Since opening in 2023, Basalt has quickly become one of the most sought-after stays in regional NSW.
Basalt's greatest strength was also its biggest constraint. The key question: how does a small, lean team know where to put its limited time and marketing budget, without a big agency retainer or an in-house data team to lean on?
We were engaged to support Basalt on an ongoing basis, providing strategic, data-led guidance across SEO, conversion, marketing channels and digital optimisation, helping the team grow with clarity and confidence while keeping the operation lean. This case study covers the audit that started the relationship and the advisory work that has followed.
The brief: clarity, confidence and direction
Audit and improve digital visibility and SEO performance
Identify key areas to improve website conversion rate
Provide clear, data-informed guidance for digital growth
Help prioritise marketing investment for a small, lean team
Set up the reporting foundations Basalt could build on as the business scales

01 SEO & website audit: finding the quick wins
When we began working with Basalt, the website had minimal keyword optimisation. We ran a full SEO audit to assess the site's structure, keyword rankings and overall search visibility.
From there, we implemented core SEO improvements, optimising titles, meta descriptions and copywriting, all within Basalt's existing budget, brand design and technical setup. Organic visibility improved as a result, with key pages climbing into the top 3 rankings for relevant search terms within a year.
Although we weren't engaged for long-term SEO implementation, we made sure the foundations were in place for the Basalt team to keep building visibility themselves through blogging, link building and media partnerships.
02 Conversion & traffic analysis: reading the real story in the data
In 2025, with the goal of increasing occupancy, we ran a full review of Basalt's website analytics to understand traffic patterns and conversion performance.
A stable conversion rate overall
A slight dip in conversion during low season
A peak conversion rate in high season, despite lower traffic
These findings let us isolate real issues rather than guess at them, benchmark performance properly, and advise on strategies to reduce drop-off and plan more confidently across the full year.

03 Advisory built to answer the big questions
Through the analytics work, we helped answer the questions that matter most to a small business with a limited budget: whether to invest in SEO, social media, influencers or Google Ads, and how to prioritise across all of them.
Designed to complement Basalt's already strong work in media and brand partnerships, our advisory covered conversion rate optimisation, email list growth and nurturing, and paid media strategy, giving the team a clear view of where their next dollar would work hardest.
04 Laying the foundation of a content system
We also implemented tracking systems and performance dashboards, so the team could measure ROI and adjust strategy with confidence rather than instinct alone.
This is where the work starts to point toward something bigger. We didn't build or deploy any AI tools for Basalt. What we did put in place, structured data, consistent reporting and a clear view of which content and channels actually earn attention, is exactly the groundwork a content system needs to run on. It means that if and when Basalt is ready to layer in more automated or AI-assisted content production, the foundation is already there, rather than something that has to be built from scratch.
For a lean, family-run business, that's often the more realistic starting point: get the structure and the data habits right first, then decide how much technology to add on top.
Project impact

Organic search rankings improved significantly
Basalt gained real clarity on where, and where not, to invest a limited marketing budget
A strong foundation is now in place for conversion optimisation, retargeting and future campaign planning
The team has a clear, data-led roadmap to grow bookings sustainably over the next 12 months
ReCo continues to support Basalt Orange with strategic digital advisory, helping the business allocate its budget efficiently and grow with the kind of clarity a small team rarely has the bandwidth to build alone.
Key takeaways
Audit before you invest: a full SEO and analytics review found the real levers before any budget moved.
Averages hide the real pattern: seasonal data showed a dip in low season and a peak in high season that a single conversion rate would have missed.
Structure and reporting come before automation: tracking and dashboards were the priority, not AI tools, so any future content system has something solid to run on.
An ongoing advisory beats a one-off snapshot: staying engaged season to season keeps the roadmap current as the business grows.
FAQs
How does a small business with a lean team know where to invest its marketing budget?
Start with an audit, not a guess. Basalt's team didn't have the bandwidth to test every channel at once, so we ran a full SEO and analytics review first, then used what we found, including a genuine dip in low season conversion, to prioritise where the budget would work hardest. That's a much steadier starting point than spreading a small budget thin across SEO, social, influencers and ads all at once.
Do you need a big content system or AI tools to grow a small business like this?
Not at the start, no. For Basalt, the priority was getting the structure right first: consistent tracking, clean reporting and a clear view of what content and channels were actually earning attention. That kind of groundwork is exactly what a content system needs to run on later. We haven't implemented AI tools for Basalt, but the foundation is built so that step is straightforward whenever the business is ready for it.
What does an SEO audit actually change for a small website?
More than most owners expect, and often without a big rebuild. For Basalt, the fixes were things like sharpening titles, meta descriptions and page copy, all within the existing brand and technical setup. That was enough to move key pages into the top 3 search rankings for relevant terms within a year, without touching the site's design or budget.
How do you read conversion data for a business with strong seasonal swings?
Look at the pattern, not just the average. Basalt's overall conversion rate looked stable, but breaking it down by season showed a slight dip in low season and a peak in high season despite lower traffic. That kind of detail is what lets you plan around the real shape of the year instead of reacting to a single number.
What's the value of an ongoing advisory relationship over a one-off project?
Consistency and accumulated context. A one-off audit gives a business a snapshot. Staying on as an advisor means we can watch how Basalt's numbers move season to season, adjust the roadmap as the business grows, and keep the reporting systems useful rather than letting them go stale. For a small team, that ongoing clarity is often worth more than any single project.
